duration: 6 Months

D4SD (Design for San Diego) presents people with community driven issues and encourages them to find solutions.

my involvement

As I researched the dynamics of social media varying from the virality of influencers to the transfer of information, my advisor and I came to an idea of using social media to further address community-driven issues in San Diego. By developing a Social Media campaign with problem and call-to-action statements, we are given a chance to ask fellow San Diegans to change — to encourage each other and the world.

How might we engage the community through social media?

D4SD focuses on the theme of sustainability and in making San Diego more sustainable. This project addresses these human-centered issues through social media. The posts contain information on providing bus stops with more high-tech amenities, electric scooters that have become hazards, coastal erosions that are threats to homes, and Covid-19 growth.

How can you make a difference?

How Might We statements coupled with images are not only used to capture problems, but also to help people understand what problem framing is.

Start by creating thought-provoking call-to-action statements on social media.

Reflection

I would like to express my gratitude to my advisor, Stephen Macneil, for his support and guidance, which made this project on social media possible. Each week, Stephen has been providing me with valuable and constructive suggestions for this project. Through this project, I came to learn so much more about civic research, meaning-making, problem-framing, and working together as a team to design for the community. I would also like to thank other members of the D4SD Civic Design Research Team: Eric Richards, Natalie Duprey, Enrique Arcilla, and Bryce Grubbs for giving feedback as I finalized the designs for this project (click for portfolio links).

Our Civic Research team strives to engage the community through community initiatives such as the D4SD Wiki Page that maps out problems that the San Diego community faces, and this social media campaign that uses social media to engage the audience. I am thankful to have been given this opportunity to lead this social media campaign to further advance the D4SD goal in the San Diego community and to reach a bigger audience.
