Scrapbook
Role: UI/UX Designer

duration: 2 days
SOFTWARE: Adobe XD AND Invision
SKILLS: prototyping, wireframing
Overview
The designathon called for a mobile app that ultimately empowers families and groups of friends who travel together with a collaborative way to document, organize, and share their travel experiences and stays to the larger Airbnb community. Given only 48 hours to tackle this challenge, my team and I discussed our values and came up with a battle plan. Scrapbook is a mobile application designed to make your memories last forever.
design problem
My team and I have been on a number of Airbnb trips and we highly empathize with those that travel together and share their travel experiences. As a content creator, I am constantly sharing photos and videos with other individuals. Being able to put myself in the shoes of our audience is a characteristic that I am proud of. We compiled a list of problems that we valued:
Then, we focused on the core of which these problems originate from. In other words, what do users want?
To be able to store all the media created during a trip
To have access to all the media my friends have
To create media I have from the trip
methodology
After identifying the design problem of photo sharing applications, my team and I moved to looking at any direct and indirect competitors. By doing so, we getting a broader view of which features are important when designing a media sharing application. Moving forward, we started with making paper sketches and wireframing.
iteration 1:
Focusing on these core problems and values, I did some paper sketching to get an idea of how the mobile app would potentially look like. Having too many sketches is always useful (thank you to my design professor for helping me realize this)!
iteration 2:
Gathering inspiration from airbnb’s mobile app in addition to keeping the values in mind, I found it easier to create mid-fidelity prototypes with Freehand Invision. The screens of a mobile app were drawn: welcome screen, home page, upload page, experiences (sharing), and location search. After several iterations, my team and I gathered our sketches and discussed the different design features we wanted in our app. As you can see, we focused on the aspect of swiping through these experiences as you do with a scrapbook (I was actually inspired by the scrapbook in UP!).
final solution: SCRAPBOOK
— a mobile application designed to make your memories last forever
We wanted to bring back the days scrapbooks were used to keep track of photos, videos, memories, and experiences. I personally think that nothing feels better than looking through old photos and reminiscing - especially when you go on amazing trips with friends and family.
Using Adobe XD, I focused on creating interactive prototype screens that showcase the memories and experiences one experiences through Airbnb. With repeat grids, countless of interactions including voice command search, swipe feature, and other design features of Adobe XD, my team and I were able to create a mobile application where members can create pages of the scrapbook from trip media and relive that experience together.
